“Skills Learned Review”

There are a lot of skills I have learned through out English 1010 course. Before taking this course my writing was not good it all. In the beginning of this course I was trying to improve my writing and gain skills to make my writing batter.

The first skill that I learned is how to to Control features such as sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and appropriate documentation (MLA). After doing the writing assignment I realized that I gained this skill. I learned how to format a paper in MLA. I also learned how to make sentences stronger and how to fix my grammar. This skill will help me in my writing future which almost all the papers required the MLA format and in order to be a good writer I have to fix my grammar and I have to make the sentence stronger.

The second skill I learned is how organize a paper. I learned this skill through out my writing assignment and it is so important because without organizing the paper the paper will not make since. This skill will help me in every writing assignment to make a good paper.
The third skill I learned is how to make an outline. Making an outline is the most important thing when it come to writing because outline make the writing easier and make the paper more organize before taking this class I did not know how to make an outline but I know I am doing outline in every writing assignment I have.

The third skill I learned is how identifies the author purpose. The reading assignment I had and the blogs helped me to get this skill, which I can understand, the author main point of the text and analyze it.

The important skill I learned is how make my paper longer. I wrote three papers and each of them contain more than fifteen hundred word. Before taking this course I was not eable to even write one paragraph but now I can write more than fifve paragraph.

"Writing, Technology, and Teens: Summary of Findings

In the short article Writing Technology and Teens: Summary of Findings it talks about many things. It talks about how kids are using the internet to text their friends. It talks about how the internet is affecting the way they learn and are not being able to do the right thing. On the internet many students do not consider what they do is really writing because they do not use it in the proper way. When asked many students try to always find a shortcut to do their work. For instance when they are texting their friends they try to find shortcuts instead of writing the whole thing out. Like if they wanted to say “ we are going to the mall for alex” they would text it “ we r goin 2 da mall 4 alex” it makes it less to type. With that being said teachers are saying that when students do that it interfere with their work because they do not just put it on their phone but rather on their paper. Teachers even mentioned that many students are using emojis on their work that they turn in at school.  Teachers think that students should not spent so much time on their phones because of the interference it is having on their school work. Students believe that most of their school work always require writing. But students argue that when they write they only write to a paragraph to one page. Many teens do not just use the interent for writing but they also use the internet to do research students say that they have at least one research report done once a week.  When it comes to black kids they are more likely to write in their journal when compared to whites. Many think that girls keep up with their work more than boys which is some what true when you compare male to female side by side females are more likely to keep a journal rather than boys. With that being said students should spent less time on texting and on the internet due to the interfering of their school work.

Texting and Writing

Cullington, a speech pathology major, wrote the Texting and Writing article in Dr. Laurie McMillan’s first-year composition course at Maywood University. Cullington argued in her article whether texting affect the way student write or not. Cullington did a lot of research to make her argument more stronger she did surveys and asked high school student and college students several question and she also asked some teacher their opinion she found out a big different between the teacher perspective and the student. Cullington used evidence from source like USA today, Jacquie Ream and Naomi Baron whom all agree that texting has a negative effect on academic writing. Jacquie Ream was a teacher and author of K.I.S.S.-Keep it Short and Simple. In this book she wrote, “We have a whole generation being raised without communication skills.” Cullington in the end found out that text does not affect the school writing skills.
According to Cullington research, some teachers think texting affect the student writing skills some teachers says “Texting may be fun and time saving with friends, but at affect the way student write in school.” Teachers also say school papers should have correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. Textspeak does not require correct spelling, many smart phones will autocorrect the spelling, or the writer brevis the words. Also grammar is not necessary to use while texting because text messages should be short. For all of that reason and more most of the teachers thing texting affect the way student write.
After reading Cullington article about texting and writing. I agree with her that text do not affect the way student write. I myself text and chat with my friends all day long, I also use texting during my business activities, so texting is part of our life but by the time we get to writing we do not use the same writing strategies we are using while we texting. Texting also help student to become a good writer somewhat because I think those student who text to much write more than those student who don’t text because their brain got use to come up with ideas and write quickly.

from pencils to pixels

Dennis Baron is linguist who studied literacy. He wrote the article from pencils to pixels. The first thing he talked about in this article is computer and how it changed the whole world in the past fifteen years. When almost everybody started using computer in almost everything especially writing. He also pointed out how computer change his own writing technology “I found that I had become so used to composing virtual prose at the keyboard I could no longer draft anything coherent directly onto a piece of paper.” Baron said. Baron then discussed in the pencils to pixels article the Stages of literacy Technologies, humanists Technology, the technology of writing, what writing does differently, the penile as Technology, Thoreau and pencil technology and the computer and the pattern of literacy technology.
The most thing Baron discussed in his article is the development of the production of literacy technology. For example the pencil which is not different from that of the computer because of how at evolved through time and how it produced.
Baron’s focused in this article about the ideas of literacy technologies. The first thing is the discover of the new technology and the authentication. When there is a new product come out there is only few people be able to get at first. That mean the new product be available for only few people. When the product start be easy to get the public start to put at to use familiar thing. The last stage Baron pointed out is the authentication of the new product. Baron also describes writing as a technology in and of itself. Some say writing triggered a cognitive revolution and the invention of the printing press triggered a second cognitive revolution. There is no proof why writing was invented but we know that writing starts as a type of recording.
I think Baron’s Article is interesting because Baron viewed writing by hand as constricting. I understand where Baron is coming from in the sense during typing of keyboard is less of hand-writing. It was also interesting because it viewed writing as a product writing technologies.

11-  I really found it to be too drawn out.  He takes a lot time taking notes and doing way to much revising in his work.  I do not do that much revising in my work.  I normally will reread my first draft few times where i changes some gremer and punctuation.

33-  Berkenkotter learned in his studies that Murray to do the planning and revisions than really necessary to complete those tasks. He does not spend much time on revising. She learned that the two are match to each other in many ways. She realizes that it makes sense for murray to write this way.

My Writing Process

While I am writing I like to be in a quiet room setting in a chair drinking some coffee and having the laptop in the front of me and some paper beside me. I start writing my ideas in the paper than get my things organized and type them into the laptop. The first thing I do when I have a paper I start read about the topic I am writing about to come up with ideas. While I am reading I take note so I can come back to them to know what the topic was talking about. By the time I get done with the reading I come up with a paper topic based on my reading note. After I choose a topic I start collect ideas and do research about the topic I chose. The second thing I do after choosing a topic and collecting ideas I draft my theses statement then I start organizing thoughts. In this point I start organize my though and ideas into group than argue about them. I put them in different organization in the best order to come up with my outline. After I have my outline and my though in different group I start write anything that support them. If I get boarding while I am writing about one of them group I jump to another one and start writing about at. After I think that I wrote all of my though and I argued about them I start write the conclusion paragraph based on the whole paper and I check if my introduction is match with the whole paragraphs. In this point I share my draft with others and listen to their feedback. After that I go back to my draft and read what I have wrote and check If I have to add or remove some sentences or words. After that I let one of my friends check my paper or I go to the learning center and replace overused or unclear words and make sure that all the sentences is completed and make sense. After all of that I do my proofreading, I read my paper and check spelling and punctuation and MLA format and check if everything is good than I let someone read it again and see if there is something wrong with it.

QDJ 1, 2, & 4 on page 545

1-List of the rules:
  • ·         A good essay always grabs a reader’s attention immediately.
  • ·         You must always have three or more points in an essay.
  • ·         Generating an outline for the essay.
  • ·         If the first paragraph is good the rest of the essay will be good.
  • ·         If sentences aren’t grammatically ‘correct,’ they aren’t useful.
  • ·         One achieves “flow” in one’s writing through the use of adequate transitions.

I see myself having hard time when i follow these rules:
  • ·         Preparing material, strategies, and plans in order to solve a problem.
  • ·         Achieves substance to one’s writing through the use of evidence.

2- I think the main difference, in my opinion, between the rules that the blockers use than those that the blockers focus to much on their rules and.

4- If there is  any rule confuse you in your free writing you should not follow at. This rule is heuristic.

QDJ 1, 3, 5, & 7 on page 587-88

1- is to clean up speech; the redundancy of speech is unnecessary in writing, their logic suggests, because writing unlike speech, can be reread. Thus redoing means cleaning up the paper and crossing out.

3-that we are able to change writing without having to apologize or say we miss worded, but word and speech can’t be retraced except by saying that that one retraces it.

5-that experienced writers see the writing process like one thing, they write, revise, brainstorm, all at the same time, but inexperienced writers have to do each step by itself.

7-they were taught that in schools. Yes, it does match what I have been taught my entire life.

QDJ 2, 3, 4, 5, & 7 on page 526

2- List
- Collecting and keeping tracks of texts.
- inter textual analysis.
-Relating text to an initiating text
-Relating text to source texts.
-Tracing a series of texts.
-Tracing language across multiple drafts
-Concurrent accounts.
-Using naturalists accounts.
Process logs.
Integrating data from multiple sources.

3- Composition is the where are you and what are you doing of the paper. The attitude of the paper. Composition is where the voice and tone of the author is set. Inscription is the action of putting the composition onto action of writing a paper. Composition usually comes first.

4- The reason why we make differences to the kinds of authorship is that we know who wrote it, who it is intended for, and who in is enacting it.

5- The structure of participation is where the writer has eventually taking all his ideas from to put them into this writing. He includes reading, notes, previous works from themselves and others.

7- All these styles of writer accounts are great. I like the naturalistics writer style mostly because of how they go with the flow of writing. Wile concurrent where you put your ideas down first confuses me. Retrospective writing relies on people memories which van become distored. Process logs seem to be great if you will take the time of fill them out. They are too time consuming and too much unneeded details. Semi structured intervening is great since you plan the questions ahead of time but what if the person ways all your questions into different direction then needed. Stimulated interviewing feels like it can go very biased to the ability to change the behavior of the setting.

Things i want to change in my paper

After submitting my paper, the changes that I would like to make is to put more details in my paper and have better sentence structure and also better transition words. Also staple my rough draft to my paper.

                                                                            page 205

1-by looking at the feeling and the emotion all the writer use different skills in writing as if they story or something else.-I agree because people using different method when they writing stores or anything.

3- I don't think school has a major role in creating ones mind. because is all about the culture the body live and who the person stay with and how they think about things.

FAVORITE CHILDHOOD BOOK

Since I was a kid up till this point my favorite book is Quran. This is the first book I read when the first I learned how to read. The Quran is the fundamental of Muslim life which include everything about what they should and shouldn't do in their life. At the first my grandfather was teaching me how to read at in the correct way than when I started school there were a class just for that book every year. I also learned and memorized part of at when I used to go to mosque. This book is in a different language and I really have not read any English book because I have been in the US only 3 years so I wasn't able to read any English book because when the first I came to the US I wasn't speak English at all.

1-The effect that shifting create between the first and third person is a feeling that there are two people being talked about in the text. The first person use when the author talking about his feeling and reaction and the third person use when it is explain what is happing.  I was taught to do not go back and forth because it will confuse the reader and make it look bad.

2-Is a different way of speaking and writing as using symbols rhetoric is complete study of language.

3-Yes. I felt professional and knowledgeable. I could almost feel as if I’m in my English teacher’s shoes. My style of writing changed dramatically. However, I had to stay focused and block the outside world.

4- One element of this process that resembles my own is the tendency to procrastinate. I also share the same actions during my procrastination. For example, I would stare at my paper with a blank face. Then I look for undone chores to finish, watch a movie, log into my computer, etc. I would constantly find myself being productive in other things besides writing my paper.

Skills to be Learned

There are few skills I think is very important to learn for the beginning writer and what I also want to learn. The first one is to be able to Control features such as sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and appropriate documentation (MLA). The second one is to be able to Identify how an author’s purpose. The third one is to Discover, develop, and explain ideas through the writing processes. The fourth one is to compose an effectively organized essay that focuses on a clear purpose and that develops major points that support its main idea. Finally the fifth skill is to adopt appropriate voice, tone, and level of formality.
The first skill is to be able to Control features such as sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and appropriate documentation (MLA). This is the most important skill to me because by learn this skill I will be able to format a paper in MLA which is important when it com to writing papers because we have to set most of the papers in this format to be accept and to get a good grade for at also by learning this skill I will be able to get my paper done in the correct way with the right grammar and spelling.
The second skill is to be able to Identify how an author’s purpose. This is a good a skill because by knowing the author’s purpose I can understand everything that he or she wrote and get the main idea about at so if I want to write about at I can easily explain at. The third skill is to Discover, develop, and explain ideas through the writing processes. By having this skill I will be able to make my paper better so at will sound good for the reader.

The fourth skill is to compose an effectively organized essay that focuses on a clear purpose and that develops major points that support its main idea. By making organized essay the essay will look good to the reader and easier to understand the main point from At. Finally the fifth skill is to adopt appropriate voice, tone, and level of formality. This is a good skill when at come to reading because by knowing this skill I will be able to Understand the different writing voice, tone. I think all of these skills is very important to learn be success in English writing and reading.
